Martin Schongauer ca. 1447 – 1491 Madonna of the Rose Bowertempera on panel (200 × 115 cm) — 1473
This painting of Mary with child is considered tp be Martin Schongauer's most important work. It is praised for Mary's beautiful red gown, for her absent-minded gaze, and for the detailed depiction of flowers, trees and birds. The paint was applied on a golden background. The work used to be larger, approximately 250 x 165 cm. The present, neo-gothic frame was added around 1900, together with the richly decorated wings. Rate this work of art: |
