Gideon, who was to become one of the great Judges, had been ordered by God to destroy the altar for Baal. He was also told to cut the surrounding wood and use it for a fireplace to sacrifice cattle. Fearing revenge Gideon and his men acted at night so they could not be seen. Pieter Aertsen makes that clear by showing torches and the long shadows they cast. This drawing in ink was a design for a stained glass window. |
