Il Tintoretto 1518 – 1594 Christ before Pilateoil on canvas (515 × 380 cm) — 1565-1567 Scuola di San Rocco, Venice This work is linked to Matthew 27:24 Like a shining beacon Christ in his white gown stands before Pilate, the Roman administrator of Judea. From the dark a crowd watches as Pilate washes his hands - suggesting he wants nothing to do with what is about to happen. In the foreground a clerk writes down all that is said. This large canvas is one of many he and his assistants made for the Scuola di San Rocco, the house of a religious fraternity in Venice. It is in the Sala dell'Albergo, one of the rooms in the Scuola.
