Jonah spends three days and nights in the whale's stomach. The animal had swallowed him whole after the prophet had been put overboard by the crew of the ship by which he had been trying to avoid a mission from God. Once inside the whale, Jonah sees the error of his ways, after which God makes the whale spit out Jonah. It is a childish work by Jan Brueghel – the whale has the head of a dog and Jonah looks suspiciously fresh. Oak panel. |
