Hans Holbein the Younger 1497/8 – 1543 The Passion of Christoil on panel (150 × 130 cm) — ca. 1524 Kunstmuseum, Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basel Hans Holbein the Younger biography This work is linked to Luke 22:1 Four panels depicting scenes from the Passion. Top row, from left to right: on the Mount of Olives, the Arrest in the Garden, Before Caiaphas, and the Scourging. Bottom row, from left to right: the Crowning with Thorns, the Via Crucis, the Crucifixion, and the Entombment. Originally these were two wings of an altarpiece. It was probably made to fit a niche in Basel's Minster church. It was commissioned by Maria Zscheckenbürlin, a widow who ordered an altar in the niche. Rate this work of art: |
