Gabriel appears to Zacharias. The priest may be known by the seven-branched candelabrum in the background. He is struck with muteness, as he refuses to believe that he and his wife will soon become parents. This painting, done on paper with watercolor, whitening and pencil, is one in a series of sketches Ivanov made for large fresco's he planned to make. |
