Herod Antipas, the governor of Galilee, is reproached by John the Baptist for his illegal marriage to his sister in law, Herodias. Herod had much respect for John. Herodias however wants the Baptist arrested, and that is what happened. This is an undated painting by the Dutch master Pieter de Grebber of Haarlem. It clearly shows how Herodias tells Herod to not let John get away with his rebuke. |
